Phone: Nokia N95 Vs Apple’s iPod, video playback battery life

The iPod is probably the most popular portable video playback device available. With Nokia positioning the N95 as a tiny jack of all trades, I thought it would be interesting to compare the two.

This test involved video playback. Both screens were set to about the same brightness level, the N95 was not running any other apps, other than Real Player. The bit rate and codec (H.264) and resolution was the same for the video files used on both the iPod 30gb and the N95. The N95 had a 3G signal the whole time of the test and also had Bluetooth switch on.

In other words, I spent a great deal of time making sure that this was a fair test. The results?

Total playtime til battery death on the N95:
3 Hours, 14 Minutes
Total playtime til battery death on the iPod 30gb:
4 Hours, 4 Minutes
So, for serious video playback, the winner is still the iPod, not really a huge surprise as the iPod has massively more storage space and the whole iTunes ecosystem to call upon, as well as better battery life.

However, for occasionally video playback, the N95 performs very well indeed, offering enough battery life to watch a couple of movies!

For the record, video on both the N95 and the iPod, looks about as good as you can get on such small screens.
