Photo: Phones Vs Cameras

As regular readers will know, I love to do ‘face offs’, comparing the latest Nokias to other bits of cool kit. Here is the lastest in the series.

Nokia N93 vs N93i vs Canon HV10 vs Nikon Coolpix 5000. That’s two top spec camera phones verses an HD camcorder in photo mode, verses an aging five mega pixel classic from Nikon.

The results are interesting. Top left to bottom right - N93, N93i, Canon HV10 and Coolpix 5000.

The Canon HV10 is a clear winner in this particular test, not a real surprise. The Nikon had trouble focusing, as did the N93. The focus on the N93i and the HV10 were perfect.

Looking a little closer, it’s easy to spot some colour noise on the N93i shot, it’s so bad that you can even see it in the much reduced sample just above this paragraph (top right). The more pictures I take with the N93i the more I realise that it’s really just an N93 with slightly different photo processing algorithm. That’s not a bad thing as such, it’s just that readers planning to upgrade from an N93 to N93i might want to think carefully before handing over their cash (especially if they are already well practiced in the art of tidying up there N93 shots). Now that the continuous auto-focus (during video) is no more, what does the N93i offer over the N93, other than a better screen and a smaller case?
