The Nokia N95 underwent a test today. It was the first chance to use the 95 as intended - a total convergence device.

As regular readers will already know The Creative Life Blog is primarily interested in technology that enables creativity, hence you’ll rarely find reviews or tests of some of the 95’s more mundane features, such as making a call, sending a text message, or installing an application.

I’m mostly interested, as I’m sure many of you are, in pushing the unique aspects of this ‘computer’ to their limits.

Today I approached, and in some cases, overstepped the limits of the 95. The GPS Sat Nav, the 5 mega pixel camera, the DVD like video recording and the battery life, all took a sound beating!

First, may I present photos . . .

All the pictures here were taken on the Nokia N95, many have had effects and editing applied to them in nothing more exotic than iPhoto. One of the things I wanted to play around with was cropping. As many of you have already testified, cropping is just about the number one reason for having 5 meg over 3 meg.

As usual, I’ll let the results speak for themselves, but I will just say this - the 95 makes for a very capable camera. Everything works exactly as you’d expect it to and the end result is that you honestly forget that you using a phone, something which I think many K800i users would claim.

Problems? The red tint was still present on some of the pictures and the sharpening was too harsh on a few - but I’ve never used a camera yet that didn’t have it’s own set of foibles, so expecting the 95 to be perfect is a bit silly. Like all cameras the sooner you get familier with it’s ‘personality’ traits, the sooner you can start maximising it’s advantages and compensating for is weaknesses.

A brief warning - some N95 reviews in the coming weeks will take the opposite stance, maximising the weaknesses and minimising the strengths - I’m not entirely sure why some reviewers tend to do this, I can only assume that they may perhaps be trying to blame the 95 for their own lack of skill or effort. Yes, a potential buyer needs to know problems with a product before purchasing, but it’s also important that they are also aware of the it’s full capabilities.

Next time I’ll be looking at video.http://www.flickr.com/photos/11851299@N00/sets/72157600039057401/shapeimage_1_link_0
