No other camera phone has been subjected to more scrutiny than the Nokia N95. The camera in particular seems to have captured the imagination of many, and for good reason! Nokia’s first 5 mega pixel shooter brings the hope of finally being able to enjoy the simplicity of having one small device to perform all manner of big tasks.

It’s early days of course, give it a few more weeks and we’ll have a good idea of just how successful the N95 can really be as a camera replacement. However, after just one day I can confirm that there are many reasons to be cheerful.

I’ll let the photos do the talking, but I have a sneaky suspicion that you’ll be surprised. If you are awaiting your pre-ordered N95 start getting excited, it’s something quite special!

Please note that I selected ‘soft’ sharpening in most of these photos. Also note that they are unaltered, straight from the N95.

REASON 1: Great Detail

REASON 2: Rich Colours

REASON 3: Nice Macro

REASON 4: Reasonable Low Light

The N95 is probably at it’s best in the hands of someone who has experience of camera phones. You need a steady hand, patience and a good understanding of the pitfalls of tiny lenses.

I also took many similar shots on a Canon HV10 which has a huge lens and all the Canon goodness to back up that lovely CMOS chip. I won’t post the photos here as I have to think of my bandwidth costs, but the results were very similar to the N95. The detail and colour was a tad better on the N95, but it does show more colour noise than the Canon HV10.

A note about battery life - I charged the N95 this mourning at about 11:00. Throughout the day I must have taken about 120 photos, listened to one hours worth of music via the bluetooth headphones, surfed the net for a few minutes, sent about 60 megs of data over bluetooth to my MacBook, made 40 minutes worth of calls, played about 5 minutes worth of video, sent and received 5 text messages and only now is it politely asking to be charged. In my experience of gadgets, that’s pretty good going.
