This was never going to be easy. The N95 has, as do all camera phones, a very tiny lens. The more light you can focus in on that five million pixel CMOS sensor, the better, and that’s why artificial light causes camera phones so much of a headache. There simply isn’t enough light!

It’s with this in mind, that I began to stage my first N93 / N93i / N95 (from left to right) photo shoot out!

The subject mater was chosen because it contains loads of detail and, perhaps more importantly, it is susceptible to colour noise at these low light levels.

So, how did Nokia’s camera phones do? Pretty much exactly as you might expect. The N93i, was the most instantly satisfying photo. The N93 had loads of noise, but a charm that’s hard to explain, and the N95 had five mega pixels of detail, but a more subdued result.

A closer examination reveals further insights.

It’s important to remind you at this point that the N95 is a beta test model, not the final shipping device. The N95, with it’s five mega pixel sensor, simply has more real detail. However, given that 80% of people only ever view their digital photos at the resolution of their HD TV or LCD monitor, usually less than two mega pixels, most of that extra detail will be wasted!

So where does that leave us? Well, if you have no intention of ever editing, or printing your photos, you may be better off with a Nokia N93i (or N93, if you’re on a budget), for everyone else, the N95 will deliver the best photos in artificial light.

Although not seen here, the flash unit on the N95 is much better than the other two phones - this is an advantage of the N95 that I’ll explore more fully in a another post.

As an aside, what happen to the Mars effect that we’ve seen so often on pre production N95’s? It’s still there, but it does not appear to be quite as prominent on my beta model. I’m still confident that this will be completely correctly by the time the N95 is officially launched.
