And so the Symbian Foundation is born. In what amounts to the first baby steps, today Nokia purchased the remaining 52% of shares of Symbian Limited.
Step one is clearly an attempt to unify the platform, to bring about a more focused experience both for developers and end users. The Symbian boys and girls are to be beamed aboard the mother ship!
Exciting times lie ahead and exciting times call for bold and decisive decisions. I must admit I didn’t see this move on the horizon. In so many ways it makes perfect sense, I’m feeling a lot more position about the future of Symbian, that’s not to say that I don’t have some concerns though.
Thinking about my pervious post about Nokia and the coming transition to pocket computers, it seems that they are quite determined to buy in the experience and expertise that they themselves don’t yet have. Come 2011 can the Foundation form the bases of a robust, powerful and cheap pocket computer / Smartphone platform? Hard to say...
If Nokia can get the Foundation up and running within the proposed timescale, there is a good chance that they can beat Android off the blocks and possibly head off Apple’s OSX (iPhone) before too many Symbian developers jump ship.
There have been times when I’ve urged Nokia to take their time, this is not one of those occasions. Nokia need to form the Foundation fast!
