Why am I featuring a new iPhone web application on a Nokia blog? Because there is a good chance that the Nokia N95 will be next...
"First up, we can divide portable and gaming devices into those that include a web browser (iPhone, Nintendo Wii, Nokia N95, etc) and those that don't (Apple TV, Xbox, most mobile phones, most home media servers, etc)."
The above is a quote from Anthony Rose on the BBC Internet Blog. Anthony mentions that their first priority is to port the iPlayer video streams over to devices that include a full web browser, and as you can see, the Nokia N95 gets a mention.
iPlayer on the iPhone looks gorgeous, it's almost as sharp as Sony's UMD format on the PSP. Though there is some break up shortly after quick scene changes, iPlayer on the iPhone is a triumph of quality and usability. The BBC are adding videos to the iPhone beta site on an hourly basis, within a week all videos present on iPlayer should be encoded in an iPhone enhancing H.264 500kbps format.
How long until we see iPlayer for the N95 and other similar Nseries devices? Surely only a few months at most.
Note: Although the current Flash streaming iPlayer web app will work with the N95 and N810, it's far from optimised and makes for a painful viewing experience.
