It's fair to say that Nokia's 'One' game is probably the most eagerly awaited title in Nokia's first batch of N-Gage games. I spent some time with ‘One’ running on the Nokia N81. I was assured that it was a near complete build, and that it's just weeks away from launch.
Sadly, 'One' does not utilise the 3D hardware acceleration available on the N93 and N95 platforms. However, the N-Gage product manager made mention of a sequel to 'One' (One 2?!) that is hardware accelerated which he said looked 'amazing'!
Regardless of the method in which the polygons are drawn on the screen, one thing is certain, 'One' is the best looking N-Gage game so far. As you'll notice on the video above (view this much higher quality Quicktime version), there is plenty of detail and some surprisingly good animation. The game is fluid and responsive, at a guess I'd say that the game runs at about 20-25 frames per second.
This and 'Bounce' (a video of that little gem soon!) are the only games that I would certainly purchase. 'One' plays like a Sony PSP game and 'Bounce' seems like something that might be perfectly at home on a Nintendo DS.
For sure, 20 minutes of game testing is certainly not long enough tell if 'One' is the one. But it certainly has the potential to become the first killer app for the new N-Gage platform.
