N81: One Fine Looking Phone!

After spending some alone time with the Nokia N81 at the L.A. event, I can confirm that this is one beauty of a phone! The Nokia design team that are responsible for this aesthetic triumph should be given some kind of award. So appealing are it’s subtle good looks, that I found myself wanting one despite the 2 mega pixel (non auto-focus) camera - that’s how gorgeous it is.

It’s hard to explain exactly why the N81 design is so very appealing, but I would have to guess that it has something to do with the overall symmetry of the design elements. There really are only two or three design elements that are repeated throughout the phone, as an example consider the shape of the Naviwheel, the shape the lens housing bezel and the overall shape of the N81 body - repeating themes and plenty of symmetry. It’s pleasing to the eye for sure

Of course, in addition to this symmetry are the colours used. The silver and, what can only be described as, warm black complement each other perfectly.

Almost everyone agreed that the fit and finish was second to none, the slider in particular being perfectly sprung. Overall, it looks and feels special.

With the N81’s focus on music and gaming, much of the commercial success of the phone will ultimately depend on features and ease of use in these two key areas. As always, the outer beauty must to matched by an inner beauty if it’s true potential is to be realised.
