Merry Christmas!

thanks to all those who have supported the Gallery the past year.

We have had a record number of visitors, and whilst we have been constantly encouraged by local residents visiting throughout the year, the distance new visitors are traveling to find us is inspiring. Usually, knowledge of our work is via word of mouth, so we are very pleased that we get talked about!

The work in the Gallery has featured many new designs ~ some abstract and some figurative, using ideas around city-scape and developing landscape further. New developments will reflect ideas and themes current in our work, but experimenting with craft processes and art ideas to bring a new set of designs for 2009.

We anticipate a busy year, regular changes to displays in the Main Gallery making space for new and innovative designs made by colleagues, running a number of scheduled craft courses at weekends.

In a creative and responsible way, Creative Recycling
tries to make something out of household and general waste matter. We do not try to re-use or make something out of every bit of waste, nor use waste in every process. It is about a wider aspiration, and the intention to INSPIRE others to recycle whenever possible and promote sustainable living.

In addition to those materials which we recycle, we use woods from sustainable sources, and avoid all toxic processes. Whenever possible we buy locally to keep transportation to a minimum.

We devote extra to labour costs for the collecting, sorting and cleaning of waste materials in preparation for the re-using processes of paper-making and glass fusing. This enables us to fully respond to our commitment to recycle.

By working with waste we are promoting alternatives to landfill and incineration using thrown away paper, fabrics, plastics, metals, glass and woods.

Can you help us?
This year we are trying to adopt a ‘carbon-free’ attitude in relation to our informative mail-outs which we send out to all the people registered on our mailing list. At various times during the year we send out information relating to special events and celebrations on printed cards and then post them in the traditional method, this involves lots of card, paper, envelopes and transportation, which is costly to both the environment and ourselves. Our aim this year is to convert our extensive mailing list over to a ‘carbon-free’ e-mail list. This will decrease the harmful effect that this causes on the environment and allow us to free much needed funds for other events and celebrations. For those who have access and wish to register then please do so at

This website was updated November 2008
It has taken nearly four years to develop our Gallery
to this standard.

We started with just the main shop area to display our work. Six months later we opened the back room, and a year later we rescued and renovated the brick ‘Shed’ for exhibitions, courses and gatherings.

This year, after much clearing of rubbish that had accumulated over years before us we created an outside space for garden displays.

The newly built workshop is the last piece of the jigsaw and has been built and established for
The Framing Service
This Gallery was set up in August 2004 by Glennis Andrews, Fiona Norton and Jack Lloyd, primarily to feature their own work. Glennis and Fiona have worked collaboratively on framed collages and free-standing artwork using a number of different processes to recycle waste for over 20 years. Jack who has a long history of supporting their work has concentrated for some years on ‘recycling’ images via photography and digital techniques, in addition to his collage and sculptural creations. Jack also runs The Framing Service that specializes in using timbers from sustainable sources with his colleague/partner, Debbie Carr
Artwork signed WAC is created by Fiona Norton and Glennis Andrews, and pieces marked with a Bystander tag are created by Jack Lloyd and Debbie Carr.
We receive no public funding for any of our own work or for the gallery itself, exhibitions , courses or framing services. We have by own capital, time and endeavor established this creative space. This is a not-for-profit business - as artists/craftspeople we all earn our living from sales of our artwork, and any balance is invested back in to the running and development of the Gallery space.`
The Gallery is the only one of its kind, and is run on a voluntary basis by the three main artists, four associate artists and three other supporters. Each persons role is vital. The courses are generally run by one of the resident artists, at the moment usually Christine Lomas or Fiona Norton. From time to time we invite colleagues to run courses which link to their exhibited work.

we have found innovative ways of achieving this !
From Valentines in February, to ‘Chorlton Arts Festival’ in May, Beech Road  Festival in July and two Special Exhibitions over summer - the success of this programme will probably create the basis of the programme for next year.  We have been able to present new work throughout the year, changing displays regularly, including up to 25% of work by other artists mostly living in the Manchester area.   As the Gallery continues to  develop and grow, we have expanded the range of our own  work, experimenting with new ways of recycling creatively.  We have also devoted more time, energy and investment to making each persons visit more enjoyable, from welcoming refreshments and live music, to developing the surroundings and increasing our opening hours.  In making all this possible we are grateful to our colleagues,  friends and family for their very valued support and help.

We are also proud to announce our success in being presented Environmental Business Pledge GOLD Award – after much dotting of I s and crossing of T s , graduating from bronze to silver, and then beyond,  we achieved a great result.  !

we were pleased to be commissioned by the Trafford Housing Trust for the second year running to design and make the special  Community Awards (10).  Our designs have been original and unique with an attempt to extol the special contributions made by the ‘unsung heroes’ in the community.
we have also been fortunate to be invited to make short film interviews (twice) for programmes on ChannelM.  And BBC Radio Manchester  (again, twice) gave us very good live coverage over summer.  On each occasion we have been lucky that interviewers have shown great empathy with what we are trying to achieve, - to explore and develop artwork within the ethos of recycling and environmental awareness, and whilst needing to sell our work, not featuring the Gallery as primarily a commercial concern.  We are running one of the videos in the Shed Exhibition area, and hope to build on this for future and create a information video – we have many visits from students, but also visitors who like to know how it all started and continues to work…… and watch out to spot several of our designs ‘hired out’ for production sets  to  ITV for “Blue Murder” series V !!

This support from the local media is very much valued, the costs involved in conventional publicity is a big
outgoing for a small business, like ourselves and though we are committed to constantly finding new ways of doing this, having some help is greatly appreciated.  Though we are a unique art and craft resource, offering original contemporary art, we remain an independent, self funded  Gallery.  All profits are ploughed back into the development of the gallery and its resources.
We are also proposing in the New Year to start with a Friends of Creative Recycling Gallery – the membership will be accessible and reasonable.  It will offer Discounts and Special Events for members, the membership fees will also contribute towards postal costs so that we can keep in touch more regularly with our supporters.
