Rule Clarification

Frequently Asked Questions

Q  Is there a misfielding rule?
A  There is no misfield rule but while the ball is in play the batters can continue to run on.

Q  Does a post stay stumped if the ball is misfielded?
A   If a post is stumped whilst the batter is at the post behind then that stops any score, under any circumstances. Posts cannot become ‘unstumped’!

Q  What happens if 2 batters are at the same post?
A  The umpire will ask the first batter to run on, the fielders can get that batter out in the usual ways.

Q  Do you score half a rounder if you run on the second no ball?
A  You do get a half rounder on a second 'no ball' to the same batter plus any other score achieved.

Q  Are two no balls in a row to different batters half a rounder?
A  No. Similarly if the last batter takes a 'no ball' and scores a rounder, if the next ball is a 'no ball' the two are not considered consecutive.

Q  Do bowlers have to bowl to the lines of the batting square?
A  No. The batter is allowed to position themselves in the batting square wherever they like and the bowler has to bowl in relation to the batter.

Q  If a batter leans the post and base towards the next post are they out?
A    Batters are not allowed to lean posts. They will be considered to have set off for the next post if the post is leaned and may then be put out by the fielders.

Q  What happens if a batter does not touch 4th post?
A  All batters should make contact with 4th post. If they do not there is no penalty and no achieved score but they can be put out by the fielding side by them touching the post before the next batter is called in. In the event nobody notices and another batter is called in the batter joins the batting line and there are no penalties or score. Umpires should be on the look out for this situation; it is not their job to make non contact known but if asked by either side then to keep neutrality any information given should be for BOTH sides to hear.

A   Does last batter still get a choice of 3 balls on limited ball innings?
Q  Last batter is normally allowed 3 good balls. In a limited balls innings then the three good balls is part of the ball count and is decided from how many balls are left.

Q  If I take a no ball in a limited ball innings does this count as a good ball?
A  On a limited ball innings 'no balls' are not part of the ball count. Batters can take advantage of this by scoring on a no ball.

Q  Can I stump the box in a limited ball innings if there is more than 1 batter left?
A  On a limited ball innings on the last ball putting the ball into the batters box will achieve side out and bring the game to a finish putting out any batters on the pitch and nullifying any score achieved at 2nd post.

Q  Is a player out if they run on to a post that has been stumped?
A   If a player is caught between posts and the post forward of them is stumped then they are out. If the player has not left the base and the post forward of them is stumped then that stops them from scoring but they can still run on when the ball leaves the post.

Q  What happens to the live batters score if they are out before another ball is bowled?
A  If a batter hits the ball and runs past 2nd post and is then out they would forfeit the 1/2 rounder scored.

Q  Can a batter run inside the running track?
A   A batter can run inside the running track but if they impede a fielder who is retrieving the ball the batter would be out for obstruction.

Q  Can I run out of the front of the box after hitting the ball?
A  A batter can run out of the front of the batters box after they have hit the ball or it has passed them.

Q  Can I chose which ball to play with in a match if we are the away team?
16.    Home teams usually provide the ball. The ball should be approved by the NRA and in good condition.

Q  Can I score a rounder if I have run two bases in front of the stumped post?
A   A player scores a rounder by passing all the bases in order and touching 4th post. The fielding side stops the rounder by touching the post immediately ahead of the batter. If a batter is waiting at first post and second post is stumped, they may run on while the ball is in play but they will not score.
