The Camden School Sport Partnership has been collecting PESSCL data since 2003-4. Chief among our aims is that children in Camden schools take part in a minimum of 2 hours of High Quality PE and School Sport every week. PESSCL data shows a constant rise in the number of schools providing 2 hours from 62% in 2004 to 82% in 2007.
It is vital that we maintain our momentum to reach (and hopefully exceed) the estimated 85% target by September 2008.  Everybody is working very hard to collate the figures at the moment and we are very grateful for this co-ordinated effort.

SSCos have begun to set dates with primary schools to undertake the multi-skills testing for Year 6 that was piloted last year.
Please liaise with your family SSCo to arrange the testing for your pupils so that results can be collated by the end of term.
This information is very important for transition to secondary schools and has been requested specifically by secondary Heads of PE.
The data not only gives secondary schools a good picture of what primary pupils have achieved, but  reflects the hard work teachers have put in over the year.

The deadline for completion of the PESSCL survey is
Friday 23rd June.
All surveys should be returned to SSCos by this date – please do not submit the survey yourself.
Last year’s PESSCL results influenced whether schools received either Activemark or Sportsmark awards for their schools.  All schools who achieved higher than the 90% 2-hour figure received the award.
It has been suggested that the criteria will remain the same this year.

Dare2Dance
Pro-Active Central London have been successful in securing £150K from the LDA for a very exciting and innovative dance project. The project aims to get more young women active through the medium of street dance and hip hop and spans PRO-ACTIVE Central, South and North London. The dance project is called Dare2Dance and its focus is on Young Women aged 14 years and above.
Working in conjunction with Nike, Bebo, London Youth Dance and Independance (a hip hop dance agency) the aim is to reach out to young women and girls to persuade them to come along to a Street Dance Event. This will be held at the Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre on the 13 July 2008 as part of the Big Dance week, so please put the date in your diaries.

We are convinced that there are hundreds of women and girls who practice routines with their friends in their bedrooms, kitchens, youth clubs or during their free time at school or college. We all know that we have more confidence if we are attempting to do something together, so for this event we will be asking groups of young women to perform together. All they need to do is rehearse a short piece (1 1/2 mins in length) and then turn up at the Southbank Centre to compete.
We are holding at least 6 roadshows during June at local festivals with Nike D-Clash dancers performing and promoting the event to try to encourage young women to sign up. More details of these workshops will be distributed over the next few days.
Due to the tight timescales we are asking for our partners to spread the message widely to groups of girls that they may be interested in the programme.
We are just in the process of printing glossy posters and leaflets which we will be distributing through our networks and that you may find arriving at your work place soon and we ask that you give these out to any girls you work with or distribute to other agencies you work closely with. We will be sending out more information on how young women can register for the event within the next week.
At the competition on 13th July, the best groups and talented individual dancers will be selected and they will be offered a Nike D-Clash dancer as a mentor for 3 months, to help them to prepare for the finals at the B.Young- B.Supreme Festival on October 18 2008 where they will compete again to determine the overall winner.
For those who don't make it to the final, the Dare2 Dance event at the South Bank Centre is only the first part of the project. When individual girls or groups register they will automatically join our mailing list and will be invited to join in participation opportunities over the course of the year led by hip hop or street dance teachers from within the community.
There is also a training element to the project and we will be looking to train up dance leaders and dance teachers to gain accredited qualifications. More about this will follow in due course.
For further information contact either Ruth Shaw at shawr@lsbu.ac.uk or Judi McCartney at judi@independance.co.uk

Free Swimming for ALL by 2012 - ?
England's swimming pools could be free to use by the time of the London 2012 Olympics, says the government.
Over-60s are to be given free admission to public swimming pools in an £80m initiative, part of a bid to get more people involved in sport by 2012.

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham said future funding would allow free entry to under-16s, then to everyone by 2012.
Local authorities in England are to get £80m next year to scrap over-60s' charges, and a further £60m for refurbishing and maintaining pools.
In addition, there is set to be an increase of Olympic-size 50m pools from 23 to 30 by 2012.

The move is part of an attempt to have two million more people taking part in some form of physical exercise by 2012.

In Camden, the council already funds free swimming for under-16s during the school holidays and for over-60s in the mornings.

Free school holiday swimming will run from April 2008 to March 2009 and includes the Easter, summer half term, summer, autumn half term, Christmas and spring half term school breaks. The deal will allow all children under 16 to swim for free on weekdays from 10am to 2pm at Oasis leisure centre, Covent Garden, and 10am to 12 noon, 1pm to 3pm at Swiss Cottage leisure centre.

Free swimming for all under-16s is on a first come first served basis at:
Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, Winchester Road, NW3. Tel: 020 7974 2012 Oasis Sports Centre, Endell Street, WC2. Tel: 020 7831 1804
