There have been significant achievements in the Partnership over the past year, none of which could have happened without your dedication and enthusiasm – thank you.
After 6 years in operation we are starting to see real changes in PE and school sport. More children are active and for longer. They have more opportunities to perform and compete within and outside their schools. Camden’s PESSCL figures have steadily climbed from 62% in 2002-3 to 82% in 2006-7. Fingers crossed we will hit the target of 85% for 2007-8 (% based on the 2-hour participation target per week). This year’s PESSCL figures will be announce mid-October and will also influence whether schools achieve Activemark or Sportsmark status.
Membership to The CSSA continues to offer a fantastic range of competitive activities for primary schools. The Federation and CSSBA serve the same role for secondary schools. We are grateful for the support of Sports Development providing Camden Athletics & Cross Country competitions and London Mini Games. We will continue to work with them to increase participation in the London Youth Games.
Camden’s Competition Manager is working on ways to support increased participation with children of all abilities – he has resurrected TAG rugby as a Borough event and is in the process of publishing the Camden Competition Plan for September.
Camden is fortunate to have groups of student volunteers who regularly referee and umpire competitions. Some of these individuals are now paid to work in sport.
The NVQ course at Talacre is for over 16s. They support primary and secondary competition and work with Sports Development.
Sports Leaders courses are well established in most secondary schools and one has run Dance Leaders. Junior Sports Leaders who are under 16, coach and run tournaments for younger children. One school has initiated Young Leaders for 8 to 14 year olds and others run Community Leaders for over 16s.
Buddy systems are working in some primary and infant schools. These offer opportunities for children to encourage younger age groups to be more active at play and lunch times, often under the supervision of lunchtime supervisors.
in newly designed playgrounds.
Schools are improving their links with local community clubs aided by the new Notice Board section on this website - below right. You can download flyers to promote clubs in your area. Great for PESSCL question 8.
Two secondary schools have formal links with the youth section of Highgate Harriers. Links with Camden Basketball Club and Cumberland Netball Club are on the way.
Big Lottery activities will run for the next two academic years. Details are being finalised but will include both primary and secondary projects – thank you to all who replied to the consultation exercise. We will try to accommodate your requests.
The SSCo team will be fully staffed from September after a new appointment at South Camden. The SSCos play a vital role in delivering the Partnership objectives. Special thanks to all of them from the School Improvement Service.
