NOW YOU CAN REALLY SEE IT

The trusses are up, the windows are framed in, and some of the interior partitions are installed. You can walk through the spaces, look out and see the views, and it’s looking great. Another big deal is that we came to the decision, slowly and thoughtfully, to remove the old large pine trees to the south and west of the buildings. Many of these were too close to the road, and when we went to grade the road and new swales we were cutting into the roots. As well they shaded the driveway, parking areas, and buildings, which al would benefit from more sun. The major benefit is we opened up fantastic views from the buildings, with a broad panorama of the mountains. We are laying plans to replant these areas, likely with a small orchard, which will provide a “green screen” to the road, provide some food, and stay low enough not to impact views.
We have been developing details for the interior fit out of the building- Milford has been working on office furnishings, Chad has been working with the Education Committee on interpretive displays and information, and I have been working with Arthur and staff on the retail area of the hiker center, including merchandising, lighting, and the sales counter.
We have made a decision to relocate the boiler to the wood shed, in order that access be more convenient for staff, and that wood needs to move one less step. The chimney is being generously provided by Bob and Marge Fish. While we’re on donations- our uber-volunteers Eric and Laurel Tobiason have volunteered to build and donate materials for the entry pavillion, to be built as a welcome point for the path from the parking lot to the front door.
Laurel and Eric also helped out greatly on the volunteer timber raising in August, along with Duncan Syme of Liberty Head timber framers, and his crew. For those who haven’t heard- about 40 volunteers came for two days- we assembled and hoisted frames, lifted and framed walls, installed blocking, and had an altogether classic GMC weekend. It was great to see old friends, and see so many new connections made. The event was well covered by the press- TV and newspapers. President Rich was there both doing some heavy lifting and working the press. Pete and Ben were working to keep the troops orderly, Steve Elder kept a watchful eye over us all, and was incredibly patient and helpful.
Since that day brother Mike and crew have been tuning up our progress, and continuing on. We’re hoping to see roof panels on by the end of October. Hope you all get a chance to drop on by and check it out. this is my favorite phase of construction, when buildings come to form.
With a great volunteer weekend in August and great support from our contracting team, the frame is coming together, and you can really see it!
