Our next Parent Connect is tomorrow night Tues. 11/6 from 8-9pm in Room 7 at Pleasanton Presbyterian Church.

Sue Knuppe, Northern California State Coordinator for Moms In Touch International, will be joining us and will share with us about this awesome ministry. Moms In Touch International is two or more moms who meet for one hour each week to pray for their children, their schools, their teachers and administrators.

This will be a great evening of learning and discovery about an opportunity to make a significant difference in our community through prayer and relationships. As we reflect on the tragedies involving youth in our community over the past couple weeks, prayer is a unique response and help and habit we can practice to bless our community on an ongoing basis.

Raising Responsible Kids in An Electronic Age

We had a great time at Parent Connect last Tuesday night exploring the MySpace phenomenon and the communication vehicles and choices our students have today.

PHISH Club (the Christian clubs on our local middle school campuses) is hosting a similar seminar "Raising Responsible Kids in an Electronic Age" next Wed. night 10/17 from 6:30-8pm at Coffee Beans & Bistro on Main Street in Pleasanton. Check out my friend Martin Knuppe's email below.

Ever wonder how your student can spend 2 hrs a day on My Space ? Or talk non-stop with a dozen different friends via cell phone, instant messaging and texting? Perhaps, like Sue and I you've got the whopper cell phone bill (hint: ATT&T "forgives" the 1st one; no questions asked !!).

And what about the effect of all this stuff on our kids ? Every parent in their right mind is concerned about net access to pornography, on-line predators etc...What about the pros and cons of social sites like My Space ? How does "instant
communication" affect kids with "developing" impulse control ?

Our first parent "PHISH-inar", (a really cleaver play on words with "seminar") will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Entitled, "Raising Responsible kids in an Electronic Age" it will focus on understanding these trends and developing a concrete "action plan" for your jr. higher.

The seminar will be in a question friendly atmosphere featuring Bridget Melson, MFT, an adolescent counselor and doctrinal candidate in Neuro-Psychology. We'll also have experts on hand to answer technical questions, and comment from a police perspective.

We've reserved the back room at Coffee Beans and Bistro, (401 Main St.), across from Tully's (oops, their competition). The "PHISH-inar" free, but we would appreciate an RSVP so that we can space plan. The coffee and dessert counter will be open in the front.

Won't you join us for a cafe mocha as we discuss these crucial issues from a jr. high perspective.

Parent Connect 2007-2008 Kickoff

Sigrie Potter and I will be partnering together to lead Parent Connect this
year. I am excited about the opportunity to bring a pastor's and youth
worker's perspective to the already great parent perspectives at Parent
Connect.

Sigrie and I look forward to meeting with you for our first gathering of the
school year next Tues. 10/2 from 8-9pm in Room 7 at Pleasanton Pres.

Parent Connect is for parents of adolescents and is a forum for engaging
relevant issues we face as we parent our kids.
