The History of the Irish in Missouri...

  These entries are based upon the information I uncovered while writing the first book on the Irish in Missouri.  While I covered the whole state, the largest chapters went to St. Louis, Kansas City,  The Irish Wilderness, and Joseph Murphy who was the creator of the Murphy wagon.  The book led to the creation of our Missouri Irish broadcast.

Some Kansas City Irish of Note Today Here are some of the K. C. Irish groups I am most familiar with: The St. Patricks Day Parade, now in its 34th year, is still held on St. Patricks Day itself, with only a minor interruption of that tradition at one point. www.KCirishparade.com (smaller local parades such as the North Kansas City Snake Saturday parade are held as well). The Kansas City Irish Fest will hold its 5th festival, combining the smaller local festivals of Brookside and Westport. Some 69,000 were in attendance in 2006. (Labor Day weekend - 2007). www.kcirishfest.com The Celtic Fringe was established in 1994 to provide networking and support for people in transition locating from European celtic countries to the Kansas City area. It remains active today. www.Celticfringe.org Ancient Order of Hibernians, Fr. Donnelly Division #1 Kansas, founded in May 2002, and brings back the AOH presence in Kansas. It joins the AOH Padraig Pearse Division 1 in K.C., Missouri of long standing. The latter sponsors a radio show on Sundays. www.KSAOH.org The Irish-American Club of Shawnee; Irish Northern Aid; the local Emerald Society; and the two Ladies AOH divisions are active. Brownes Irish Market and Deli * remains the oldest business in Kansas City and the oldest Irish business in North America, as confirmed by the Irish Trade Board. June 16, 2007 was their 120th anniversary street fair. IrishKC is an extensive page on the internet at www.Irishkc.com The Irish American Cultural Center has retired from view and the Irish Museum and Cultural Center * had a grand opening on March 17, 2007. www.Irishmuseum.org The Irish Roots Cafe created the first broadcast series on the History of the Irish in Kansas City in 2007. They also created the worlds first weekly podcast on Irish genealogy and culture in 2006. 'The Shamrock' newspaper and 'Irish Life' newspaper have passed. The Irish Genealogical Foundation is now the leading publisher of Irish family heritage works. Founded in K.C. in 1978. www.Irishroots.com Sheehan's Irish Imports *, the largest in Kansas City, has expanded to 4,000 square feet of space ! www.Sheehansirish.com interviewed on the Missouri Irish podcast series. The Emerald Society of Missouri - St. Louis Chapter. Formed for individuals employed in the criminal justice system, to promote the Irish heritage and culture. There is also a K.C. Meets at Creve Coeur. http://stlirish.org/ St. Patrick's Day Parade, St. Louis, MO., They have held the parade for 38 years to date. This years parade had a reported 200,000 spectators and over 120 units.
