Internships

As well as producing food and medicine we teach how to grow your own food and how to use medicinal herbs to volunteers and Interns.  These are one of the most useful set of skills anyone can learn in a post peak oil world.  Each year we offer an internship program for 5 1/2 months from March to August and from May to October.  We are now full for 2012, we will start receiving applications in late summer for 2013.

What you will find

A learning atmosphere:  Thierry and Chanchal transfer their knowledge and skills in gardening, botanical medicine, horticulture therapy, nutrition and cooking, and healthy lifestyle practices. This is in classroom discussions, in informal discussions while we work in the gardens, during lunch, further readings from the library and your own research.  You will be involved with all aspects of the farm, from growing to marketing and preserving, vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, and berries.  You will attend all workshops and courses about growing food and using herbal medicine that we run or host on the farm.   Some Interns blog their stay with us

What we expect

That you come to get an education, that you will ask questions and have a voice and researched opinions, that you will be self motivated and take your share of responsibilities to run the farm.  That you are in good general health and that you will welcome a lot of physical and repetitive work on the land, including sometimes in bad weather.  We expect that you will have an outstanding time learning with us.  Some interns send notes of gratitude after they leave.  A young woman poet wrote this about the farm.

What we need from you

There is an internship interview form that you fill out and Email to us.   Before you take the time to write about yourself, inquire if a position is available in the Internship Program.

What to bring

Be prepared for rain and shine, hot and cold.  For your comfort and safety you are required to bring a sleeping bag, rain jacket, rubber boots, sturdy work boots, slippers, sun hat, and laptop and notebook for your research.

Our trade seemed a fair one.  I was content to forgo an income since my primary objective was to learn.  In fact, I was excited to take a step away from the formal economy into a situation where my labour contributed directly to my education.
