Reading Again

I have found a writer who really resonates with me because of an intense tenderness towards herself and others and her rabid spiritual certainty that actually contains real wisdom and compassion.

because a friend of mine who has been one of my lifelong teachers suggested it. I am working on writing CC’s story of Vietnam and needed some direction.  I downloaded this book and it was so good that I got another one of Anne Lamott’s books: Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith. I believe I could listen to another one of her books right away. They are that good.

So with a grain of salt and a fleck of truth I present to you a list of disclaimers about this author.

You might not like Anne Lamott if....

You have ever liked George W. Bush.

If you hate Presbyterians.

If you have sworn off reading about women over 50.

If the idea of reading about a woman who had a child out of wedlock bothers you.

If honesty makes you uncomfortable.

If you just can’t read another book about someone’s parent having Alzheimer's.

If you have not interest in how it feels raising a son into adolescence.

If you can not survive another book from a recovering alcoholic

If you don’t care anything about reading something that is written by someone who makes a habit of demonstrating for peace, feeding the hungry, is a democrat and a Christian and doesn’t mind writing about all of these things.

You absolutely cannot bear to hear tirades against George W. Bush.

If you hate tender and moving books.

If the idea of an over 50 year old white woman about 20 lbs over optimal weight with dreadlocks offends you.

If you can not tolerate the idea of God being a woman

But if you have an open mind about these things and others you might want to give her a try.  She is a gutsy, honest woman who has found ways to love her flawed self and others; who is interested in social justice and seems to live a spiritually centered life.
