A bit about Ingrid Law
Perhaps it was the Lake Champlain monster that started it all. Born in northern New York on May 1st, 1970, my first home was a stone's throw from the waters of Lake Champlain and its legendary prehistoric sea monster, Champ. From the very start, life was steeped in the lure of the fantastic, of tall tales and big ideas.
When I turned six, my family moved to Boulder, Colorado.
My father drove up into the mountains every day to teach in a one-room school house in the tiny mountain town of Gold Hill, where a wandering Donkey named Twinkletoes roamed the streets, freely. While visiting Gold Hill and places like it, I discovered that small things and small places can be just as interesting and extraordinary as big noisy ones, and even now, I'm drawn to tiny towns and quiet places possessing their own charm and quirky character.
As a child, I was always very nervous. And as a teenager, I was very nervous AND very shy. Thinking up stories in my head was one of the ways I dealt with my anxieties. Eventually, I started writing some of my stories down on paper. That’s how I became a writer. But even then, I did not think about becoming a professional author until I was much older.
Today, I still live in Colorado, close to family, friends, and the mountains, all of which help keep me from getting lost. I am a mom and I have one kitten, who is imaginary and spends the day lounging on the back of the sofa, purring as he dreams imaginary dreams about imaginary mice. Sometimes, I still get anxious. When I do, stories--and made-up things--still help me feel better.
If you want to know my favorite color I can’t tell you because I don’t actually have one. I like them ALL (with the possible exception of that icky brown-green color one gets when one mixes too many colors together). My favorite books change all the time, too. But when it comes to favorite cookies, I like frozen homemade chocolate chip cookies the best, hands down.
When I’m not writing, reading, or imagining new stories, you can probably find me in a movie theater, listening to music or audio books, or walking around my favorite ponds.
Here’s a picture of me as a kid, on my 11th birthday (in 1981).
