Music Educator - Ross School
This year at Ross School students will be involved in a very hands - on musical experience. As an Orff Certified Teacher I believe the students need to create musical experiences and leave the music class having created an experience and feeling very successful.
Kindergarten through 3rd Grade general music classes will be Orff based. The children will sing, chant, play, and move to classic folk songs from around the world. They will also have many opportunities to compose on classic classroom instruments, and evaluate peers and professional musicians. Theory at this tender age will include rhythm, and note names, how to write a staff and place the correct notes in the correct spot. They will also be exposed to many genres of music including but not limited to; classical, reggae, folk, blues, rock n roll, and jazz.
4th and 5th Grade students will have the opportunity to be exposed to band and orchestra instruments. In 4th grade students will be split in half to gain exposure to playing an instrument. Mr. Howitt and I will each have half the class. They will be trying instruments including clarinet, flute, violin, and trumpet. In 5th Grade the students play together in a 5th Grade band, during their school day, lead by Mr. Howitt.
The 6th and 7th Grade Program this year is very exciting. Ross School will continue with the Folk Guitar option for middle school. During their music rotation they will learn to play folk guitar with tunes from Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, John Denver, Richie Havens, and The Beatles. They will complete the semester by writing a song, recording their original work on garageband, and performing for family and friends! Mr. Howitt will be leading a keyboarding class, and Ms. Weinsoff completes the fine arts wheel with an Art class.
8th Graders have the options of Art, Photography, Guitar, or Keyboards. We believe that allowing these students the choice in persuing what they enjoy will help them to learn more about themselves and what their talent lies. Please join us at the Rock Awards to see these amazing students work!
Thanks so much for your support of the Ross School Fine Arts. See you at the next performance!
