ice carving secrets: Makita die grinders discontinued
The Makita GE0600 die grinder has long been a favorite among ice carvers for its light weight, durability, and decent power. Recently, however, Makita discontinued this model. For at least a little while, they’re still available from dealers until stocks run out. Ice Crafters has over one hundred in stock as of this writing, but once they’re gone, places like eBay might be the only options.
Personally, I use several GE0600s while carving, keeping a different bit on each one. (I also use a heavy duty Makita, the GD0800C) I find the light weight to be a big factor in my choice. For a long time, I used a heavier grinder from DeWalt because I liked the paddle on-off switch, but I eventually switched to the Makita, partly because I was feeling some soreness in my wrist when I used the DeWalt a lot. Another factor in my switch was the special shafts that are available for the GE0600, which allow you to attach specialty ice carving bits.
