Inside the Box – Home

welcome to inside the box

This website is dedicated to the work of Scottish author, poet, playwright, painter, illustrator, and book designer Alasdair Gray. It is intended as a resource of information for students, readers, and all those interested in the many arts of Alasdair Gray.

Gray, who describes himself as “a self-employed verbal and pictorial artist”, is the author of eight novels and numerous collections of short-stories and poems. He has been the recipient of the Scottish Arts Council Book Award and Scottish Book of the Year Award (for Lanark), and the Guardian Fiction Prize and Whitbread Novel Award (for Poor Things).

Gray's debut novel, Lanark (Canongate, 1981), prompted Anthony Burgess to describe its author as “the best Scottish novelist since Walter Scott”. It has since seen Gray canonised on both sides of the Atlantic as a key figure in postmodern art.

Inside the Box is entirely unofficial, and receives no direct input from Alasdair Gray himself. The many illustrations on the site's pages are adaptations of those appearing in Gray's books.
