Inside the Box – Home

about this site

Inside the Box was born jointly out of a pair of student projects 5 years apart. The first was an undergraduate dissertation written as part of a Master of Arts degree programme in 1997, the second was a CD-Rom developed for a Master of Science course in 2001/02.

Believing in the virtues of recycling, and seeing Gray's work under-represented on the web, I undertook to transfer as much of these projects as possible online. The title for the site is taken from an Alasdair Gray poem which appears in Old Negatives.

Most of the illustrations in this site are derived from originals by Gray himself, and have mostly been taken from the various editions of his books. The site's background is adapted from a design by squidfingers. Anything else is my own fault.

This, the fourth version of the site, was developed on a 450Mhz iMac DV+ (in luscious ruby-red), using BBEdit and Adobe Photoshop CS. It was built to W3C standards, using valid XHTML 1.0 and CSS throughout with just a hint of Javascript. This site is good with all modern browsers, and will even play nice with Internet Explorer.

Inside the Box is entirely unofficial, and receives no input, direct or otherwise, from Alasdair Gray. The site is maintained ad-hoc, as and when I can find the time and inspiration to improve it. If you have anything you'd like to contribute to Inside the Box (dissertations, articles, etc), or you just want to contact me regarding the site, please do so here.

Thanks for stopping by.
