This long without posting, there’s bound to be news... right?
Yep. Here we go.
NEWS ITEM #1
It has been so obscenely long since I posted for several reasons, not the least of which is the power adapter for my MacBook melted.
Yes, it melted. With the smoking and the burnt plastic smell and the fantastic, hysterical FIRE HAZARD... needless to say, I was grouchy. Luckily, the replacement came in 24 hours. So. Mac has redeemed itself. For now.
NEWS ITEM #2
We are taking our house off the market. So we’re not moving to San Diego - anytime soon. We’re tired of waiting around, no one is coming to see the house, and we want to go to school. So we’re taking it off the market, P. Knitty is enrolled in pre-req classes for nursing school and I’m applying to portfolio school for copywriting. Because my personal, life-long dream is to sell cigarettes to children.
I’m half happy and half miserable. The pros? I adore my friends. I adore this city (seriously, Chicago is awesome). There is no portfolio school in San Diego. The cons? WE’RE STILL HERE. We have a storage unit full of stuff that we didn’t want cluttering the place while we showed it - which we now have to empty back into the house. It’s approximately 39 degrees here at the moment. In San Diego it’s 61.
Mixed feelings. I’ll get over the grumpiness, and enjoy it at some point, I’m sure.
NEWS ITEM #3
There has been lots of knitting. It soothes what ails, y’know?
I’ve been hunting for a felted purse to make my stepmom for the holidays. Lo and behold, my Winter 2007 IK arrived on my doorstep simply brimming with the Celtic Tote - which solved my problem completely.
Here’s the back - you embroider the cables so they stand out after felting.
The design is rather genius - you knit the stiff mesh lining right into the bottom. So cool. On Ravelry? Clicky clicky.
NEWS ITEM #4
You didn’t think that was all the knitting, did you?
I think this is one of my proudest knits. I found this fair isle pattern in the Vogue Stitchionary Volume Three, and based the design of the hat on that. I’m fairly certain that the fair isle is under copyright, so I’m not planning to write a pattern or anything, but check it out. I really am proud.
The pattern: The Secret Porch Hat, my own.
The yarn: Rowan Felted Tweed, with some Karabella Boise for the lining
The needles: Addi Turbo 16” circs, size US 3
Why is it called Secret Porch? Well, the fair isle pattern in the book is called “Portico” (which is a kind of porch)... and there’s a secret in the lining.
“Most love” is how P. Knitty and I say “Goodbye” most of the time. It’s my favorite part.
Did I mention I love this hat? Tweed plus fair isle is AWESOME, and something I haven’t seen very often. From now on, it’s all I want to do. This yarn is delicious (though a warning - the orange did bleed slightly in the blocking). Ravelry link, for those so inclined.
I’m going to make a similar one for my Dad for the holidays too - different fair isle, different message inside. Well, obviously.
NEWS ITEM #5
This is it, I swear.
We have a new member of our family. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Sue.
You Johnny Cash fans out there will appreciate that Sue is, in fact, a boy. I tried to get him to come out and play for photos, but since he’s a betta fish he prefers small spaces. Plus, I can only imagine how freakin’ scary I look through a curved fishbowl holding a camera. Poor, poor Sue.
P. Knitty has always wanted a 50-gallon salt water fish tank with all kinds of exotic fish.
He settled for the betta fish in a small glass bowl with a plastic castle.
Christmas is, after all, around the corner.
Sorry for the absence - if you tend toward the Raveling, come check out the Big Issues Debate group. I’m a moderator, so I don’t get involved in the discussions (which keeps me from wanting to dig out my eyeballs with a spoon or post in anger or haste) but I’m fascinated by all the stuff that’s being discussed. Knitters really are all types.
Later, ‘gaters!
