Oktoberfest - 2009

Reported by Vicki Beno:  It was a beautiful, crisp, early autumn morning as a large group of volunteers set up their tables and merchandise for the annual Sew What fundraiser, Oktoberfest.

By 9:00 am people were milling around searching for good books from the library book sale; putting bids on a “must have” at the silent auction; selecting a plant; and taking home delicious home-made baked goods. Various vendors had tables full of their unique wares; it was a shopper’s paradise.

Even the children had activities to keep them busy. They made paper skeletons. With the aid of special glasses, their 3D chalk drawings came to life.  A bean bag toss game was enjoyed by many.

Accompanied by German music playing softly in the background, brats were grilled for the Oktoberfest café.  For $5 one feasted on a brat with 2 sides, sitting in a café under the shade of the sycamore trees.

A special treat for all was Mayor Howard’s “Historic Tour of Portal” in a double-decker bus.  Who knew that Portal: was a launch site for NASA; had a library with  catacombs strewn with human remains; had ancient Roman walls; was home to relatives of former Presidents; and the residence of ship-building magnates and world-class inventors.

A huge “THANK YOU” goes out to the Ways and Means committee members of Sew What and to all the other folks of Portal and Rodeo who made this event one of the best ever. Total funds raised: $2,633.
