Welcome

Kim Maxwell - Profile.
I am from London and have lived in Singapore since 2002 and Hong Kong two years prior to this.  I am the mother of three wonderfully funny girls aged 7, 6 and 4 who have a variety of personalities & offer a mixture of challenges.
Since becoming a parent in 1998 I have undertaken the following courses:  1) P.E.T. - Parent Effectiveness Training by Dr Thomas Gordon - 2001, 2) Parenting with Confidence Ages 0 to 5 by Ian & Mary Grant - 2003, 3) Parenting with Confidence, Ages 6 to 12 - 2005 and 4) How to Talk to Kids so Kids will Listen by Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish- 2006.
Like most parents I want my children to be happy, confident, autonomous, talented, honest & respectful with good self-esteem who can achieve whatever they want in life.  However, helping our children become this amazing person is not always as easy as we think.  Parenting is challenging to most of us.  We would be lying if we said it wasn’t.   Life is full of challenges for our children and us.  Parenting effectively will offer your children the lifelong skills they need and deserve to deal with these challenges.  It is a skill that we can learn which is why I have spent so many years reading about it, doing workshops and trying to get it right.   I am not saying that I have got it right, I am always learning but the experience I have gained, not only from raising three children, but also from undertaking four parenting workshops has provided me with many skills that I would like to share with you.
How to Talk so Kids will Listen is the most recent and inspiring workshop I have done and I would like to carry on the good work of Tanja Knutson who taught me here in Singapore.  Sadly she has now moved back to her native home in Canada.
I am an excellent communicator having worked in the Construction Industry for 8 years with a diverse range of people.  I have a Bsc (Hons) in Building and worked professionally as a site engineer, planner, surveyor and project manager.
Acting is another skill that I have acquired and I believe will enable me to deliver this parenting course to you in an interesting and energetic way.  I have performed in a variety of roles some examples being a Pirate in Peter Pan, Doctor Scott in Whose life is it anyway? and, Olivia in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.  I have passed Guildhall Grade 6 (with Honors) - Group Performance and have been acting under the direction of Centre Stage School of the Arts since 2002.
All the parenting courses I have undertaken are basically trying to send the same message to parents that most good child psychology books are based on.  Some examples being good communication & listening skills, acknowledging feelings, avoiding labeling, learning to praise effectively etc.  How to Talk so Kids will Listen & Listen so Kids will Talk is one of the very few Workshops that, in my opinion, hit the nail on the head with regards to communicating this to you and achieving an effective outcome.  It is really enjoyable, insightful, never boring or tedious, inspiring, extremely interesting and often very funny.  I really think it is important to enjoy a workshop.  It makes the whole experience much more rewarding.
Parenting is a skill that can be learned and on this workshop you will be learning a new language that you actively put into practice each week.  For 90% of the population this is proven to be the most effective way of learning.  Reading a book tends to offer you a 10% chance of putting into practice a new skill.  This language is something I believe ALL parents should learn.
You owe it to your children to be a good parent so come along and join this workshop.  It will change the way you communicate within your family and will bring more happiness to you & your children which is something we all deserve.
