Paul Hood, Photographer

Howdy, welcome to my web site.

My photographs are held in private collections in thirty-six U.S. States and six foreign countries and the list is growing.*

My love of functional art is expressed in greeting cards, coffee mugs, t-shirts and more at http://www.cafepress.com/paulnsheryl .

More galleries at http://paulhood.imagekind.com where the emphasis is on fine prints.

Blog is at http://paulhood.blogspot.com.  I post a lot of photos there, and some of my writing.

I have relocated from my home in Santa Cruz, California, and am currently residing in a rural area outside of the town of Snowflake, in the great state of Arizona. I travel a lot and my availability will depend on a lot of factors. Please feel free to Email me with any questions . Image licensing is handled on a case by case basis.

Many of my photographs have hit the front page news. My photojournalistic work has been published dozens of times in at least three newspapers.

My work is also on several web pages, a CD cover, book cover, posters and flyers. I have photographed nationally and internationally touring performing artists and musicians. I first got into this over 30 years ago, helping my dad out in his B&W darkroom, but I shoot all digital now. Digital photo manipulation via Photoshop and other programs is a big part of my artistic life.

In addition to nature photography, I love portraiture, especially photojournalism style candids and event photos. I’ve worked as a staff reporter and photojournalist. I was the weekly event photographer for Poetry Night in Washington. I enjoyed working for The Cody Rivers Show under difficult stage lighting conditions.

Using a combination of natural light; sometimes diffused and reflected, some flash as needed I achieve excellent results without the need for studio lighting. Portraiture is truly an art in itself. It requires spontaneity, technical proficiency, empathy and intuition-- a combination that you may not get from just any photographer.

This website is primarily for you to get an idea of the kind of work that I do, and maybe a bit about who I am as a person. The working relationship between photographer and model (or subject) is very important. I approach this medium as an artist, not a mechanic or a technician.

On the “about me” page you’ll find links to other web pages where you can learn much more about me and my partner Sheryl Karas, about some of the other businesses we’re involved in and what’s most important to us.

Thanks!  Have a look around and enjoy yourself.
