New Book!  Knitting Beyond The Edge

My mailman showed up with this in hand and I was surprised and delighted - I had completely forgotten that I had pre-purchased it months ago!  I hunkered right down and dug right in.
In this third installment by Nicky Epstein, she goes much further than in her previous books to show knitters exactly how to apply these beautiful borders to necklines, edges, and cuffs.  Where the previous books were simply stitch-pattern compendiums with a few patterns, this one contains edgings specifically designed as necklines or buttonhole bands, with pictures of not just swatches, but actual garment parts.
At first glance, I was struck by how busy all the stitch-patterns seemed, but thought that might be a natural result of an increasing complexity and advancing focus; after all, BW’s Treasuries reflect that, too.  As I get more into it, I find myself appreciating the more challenging nature of the embellishments.  But, if you’re one for the simple touch, pass this book up!  These result in some bold and complicated design details.
This is Nicky Epstein, after all, so there are plenty of her “knit-it-separately-and-sew-it-on” applique methods employed.  But there seems to be more of a knitterliness displayed here than in her previous tomes.  And, while the majority of offerings seem to be at a more advanced level, there are directions here that less experienced knitters will appreciate.  After all, where else are you gonna find the “blow-by-blow” on creating a shawl collar?
All-in-all, I’m happy to add this to my bookshelf next to the rest of Nicky’s oeuvre and can’t wait to find a project with which to use it.
