Across the Universe review

As a huge fan of contemporary musical movies such as Moulin Rouge, and Rent, I was eager to see another movie with beautiful music and a heart-wrenching love story. Across the Universe definitely satisfied my expectations. The movie features all Beatles songs and reminded me a lot of Moulin Rouge and Rent. In fact, one of the first Beatles’ songs I heard was, “All You Need is Love” which is featured in a medley. Little did I know before seeing the movie, Across the Universe also features this song, as well as 33 other Beatles-related compositions.
Without giving away too much information about the plot, here are a couple of things you probably need to know before going to see the movie. Although you don’t need to be familiar with the Beatles’ songs, it definitely adds to the experience, because the songs help tell the story. You should also be familiar with the 60s era of the United States—the political turmoil, the counterculture, and many of the icons from this era (such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Timothy Leary, etc.), as they are represented by some of the main characters.
I highly recommend this movie—I thought it was so amazing that I bought the soundtrack for my car. It’s rated PG-13 and is playing at Southpoint, Crossroads and North Hills. See it while you can!
