Skinny Reads
Lately, I’ve been listening to audiobooks. I just finished Chuck Klosterman’s
Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto”. I know I heard about this book when it came out but the title along didn’t appeal to me. Recently, I heard him interviewed by Ira Glass and I read an excerpt in “The New Kings Of Nonfiction”. I enjoyed this book so much that, to be honest, I was bummed when it ended. This is a very entertaining book. he talks about how John Cusack has ruined every relationship he will ever have. He compares Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson. Billy Joel, Sim City, and Guns and Roses tribute bands are explained. This is the best pop culture analysis I’ve heard. The chapters on MTV’s The Real World and Saved By The Bell are awesome. His chapter about soccer made me laugh out loud.
One of the really cool things about audiobooks is that I’m able to listen to them over and over. I have the hardest time reading a book twice but I’ve listened to audiobooks that I’ve read several times. I am sure that I will listen to “Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs” again this week. It turns out that Chuck Klosterman is my age. He talks about stuff in a time line that I can relate to. He is honest and funny as hell! Oh and he has a great voice.
