I rarely watch TV. Now this isn’t because I’m above it, I’m too smart, or have some philosophical problem with TV. To the contrary, I don’t watch TV because I’m not better than that, I’m not too smart. I don’t watch much TV because I can so easily get sucked into it. On one level I hate reality TV! When I heard about Celebrity Rehab, I thought “Wow, we’ve hit a new low!”. Today however, while flipping channels I stopped on VH1. Celebrity Rehab was on and I ended up watching a couple episodes. I couldn’t look away. The same think has happened with MTV’s America’s Next Top Model. I hate it! I’m ok with watching Heros, Lost, The Office, Frisky Dingo, and Breaking Bad. I’m not ok with watching hours of reality TV. What’s the difference? I think I know what draws me in and holds me. It’s the fact that all the shows I’ve mentioned, Reality TV included are serials. They all have cliff hanger endings, the stories unfold over weeks. I want to know what happens. Eddie Izzard said that watching reality TV is like listening to gossip. I wish I was responsible enough to watch TV without it consuming my day.
