5th graders participated in a set of mock-up emergencies out on our playground, & practiced & learned what to do in the event of a vehicle crash or wreck that involved injuries & wounded passengers. We hope we never have to use these skills, but we also just might be a little more prepared if we ever do! Here’s the scoop:

Students in Ms. Guimbarda's and Ms. Smith's Language Arts classes recently read the novels, ‘The Cay’ by Theodore Taylor and ‘Hatchet’ by Gary Paulsen.  These novels are all about survival.   The main characters in these books experience situations in which they have to learn how to survive in unfamiliar places.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in a ship wreck simulation and a plane crash simulation similar to the ones faced by the characters in the novels.  Students were divided into teams and each team had the goal of making it to a safe zone.  However, there was one catch!  Members of each team were faced with different afflictions including broken limbs and blindness.  Only one team member was completely healthy and they were faced with the responsibility of making sure the rest of their teammates made it to safety.   The only supplies the teams were allowed to use were magazines and old rags.   Luckily we had no casualties and everyone made out alive and well!  Check out the survival skills of these students!
