Henriette Lazaridis Power

Henriette Lazaridis Power is a Greek/American writer, though you wouldn’t know it from her name. Henriette comes from her Swiss grandmother who married in Greece and never looked back. Lazaridis comes from her parents, who left Greece in ’58, looking back and going back constantly. Eleni is her original middle name, but she dropped it when she added her husband’s Irish Power, since her initials wouldn’t have been very promising. Her fiction centers on Greece and its fraught relationship with its ancient and more recent past.

Her first novel, about a young woman discovering the secret to her mother’s wartime youth, will be published in 2013 by Ballantine Books.

Power writes occasionally for The Millions and for the blogs Beyond the Margins and The Museum Game. She is also the founding editor of The Drum, a literary magazine for your ears, publishing fiction and essays in audio form. When she’s not writing, she trains as a competitive rower on the Charles River.
