HealthCare Nepal
January 3, 2012
Ann Brooks Carter, 1917-1994. It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Ann Carter on December 28, 2011. She was 94. I first met Ann and her husband Ad in 1973 when I took a teaching position at Milton Academy in Massachusetts. It was a trip to Nepal with Ad in 1994 that planted the seeds for HealthCare Nepal’s work in that impoverished country. Ad died in 1995 but Ann remained involved, encouraging our approach of asking people what they needed and then helping in whatever way we could. She was a Founding Board Member and provided the funding for our first project, an HIV/AIDS training program in Kathmandu, as well as other projects over the years. I would always try to call her from the airport on my way to Nepal and on my return we would have long conversations about our progress and news of her many friends there. I was fortunate to visit with Ann in early December and to be with her loving family the morning after her passing. I will miss her dearly.

Winter Clothing to Murma: In June 2009, a team headed by Dr. Subarna Mani Acharya traveled to the village of Murma Mugu District in western Nepal, where they delivered warm winter clothing to 350 children and many other residents of this impoverished area. Purchase of the clothing was made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Judith Waligunda, HCN’s Medical Director, and her husband, Dr. Frederick Basilico. The two Boston physicians were volunteers at our health camp in Murma in October, 2008. Photos will be posted soon.
February/March, 2011 Health Camps: Two health camps were held, one in the town of Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, near the border with India, and a second at Shree Ram Higher Secondary School in the village of Koshidekha. Photos will be posted soon.
October, 2010 Health Camp: The health camp in Barhabise that was postponed due to political agitation in May, 2010, was successfully held in early October, 2010. Photos will be posted soon.
