FAQ’s for Second Grade
*Assignment Book Tips:  The assignment book is an important communication tool between you, your child and your child’s teacher.  It also provides a chance for your child to learn the lifelong study habit of scheduled assignments and recording due dates.  PLEASE be sure to sign the assignment book each night!  Be sure your child has recorded the last page read in his/her WEB book.

*Snack: What should I send for snack?  Second grade snack is served mid morning and therefore is viewed as a “nutrition break”.  Please do not send in any cookies, chips, or chocolate.  A small bottle of water is sufficient for a drink.  We only have around 15 minutes for snack, so please just send in a small snack!

*Choosing a book:  The Five Finger Method
WEB (Wonderfully Exciting Books) are an important part of our reading program in second grade.  Reading each night fosters a love of reading and increases fluency and comprehension.  These books should be on your child’s independent reading level though.  That means your child makes fewer than five errors per 100 words and can talk comfortably about what he/she has read.  So how can you help your child choose an appropriate book?  Try the “Five Finger Method”.  Have your child read the first page of the book and hold up a finger when he/she gets “stuck” on a word.  At the end of the page, if he/she is holding up five fingers, the book is too hard (at this time - it may be a book to try later!)

*Math Facts:  What should my child know in second grade?   Fluency in basic facts is essential for success in math this year and for years to come.  Second graders should automatically know (with no fingers!) addition facts with sums up to 18 and their related subtraction facts.
How  can I help my child?  There’s no easy way out of this one.  It takes practice ad more practice to help your child commit these facts to memory.  Call out facts in the car, take flash cards with you and quiz your child as you wait for food at a restaurant, keep a chart at home and track success with stickers, etc.  The work is worth it!
