MSR over

Well, my time at MSR is at an end. I am back with my family in Ireland to spend Christmas together. Here are some random reflections on my time:

I am really going to miss the Microsoft building. It had a good vibe, especially at night. I also like the juxtaposition of being able to see Kings College Chapel (built in the 12th Century) from such a  contemporary building.

I will miss having unlimited funding for my research. We were able to test out a whole lot of ideas really quickly as there was no flapping about trying to find money to buy equipment. (The 9 cellphones on the right are just some of the ones we got to conduct or test.)

I won’t miss my trusty bicycle. It was kind of Richard to lend it to me, but I’ll stick with my motorbike. It seems the street cred in Cambridge is proportional to the size of your bike basket, but I don’t think this will catch on in Cape Town. Actually, to be honest, the Cambridge cyclists scared me silly - much more so than the traffic in Cape Town.
