SMS as an HIV preventative

Phil Barrett has just moved to Cape Town. For those of you who don’t know, Phil is one of the founders of Flow Interactive - a usability/interaction design bureau in London (they have worked on many impressive projects, like the BBC web site). Phil and I have been chatting about usability, HCI etc. and it is great to meet someone of his experience. Anyway, he recently told me that one of his friends runs a mine in Tanzania. So far as his friend is concerned, the guys on the mine who take the time to SMS their wives regularly don’t get HIV - they are less tempted to ‘wander.’ There has been no formal study on this yet, but surely this would be a great form of HIV preventative at the cost of about 10 US cents per day.
