We found a map of the Cinque Terre: “five lands” or five villages along the sea that have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the area is a national park with lots of hiking trails. We drove to the northernmost village, Monterosso and explored for a few hours, had lunch, and tried to find a place to stay for two nights. After one try, we decided to head for Levanto, a larger city just to the north of the park, where we were successful in finding a place for two nights. It is a furnished apartment toward the center of the city, far more than we needed, but very comfortable, and all that was available from the first hotel with a parking lot that we found. Friday, June 2, is a national holiday in Italy, and most of the hotels were booked for the whole weekend, starting with Thursday night. I am thankful that we have our hotel reservations for the rest of the trip.
