design for a changing world

Our Master of Design Programme is twelve months of intensive study, research and design practice. We take a multidisciplinary approach, introducing new methods, tools and strategies to equip students for futures as design researchers and practitioners.

We draw upon the diverse, unique and internationally acclaimed research conducted in the School of Design.

In the recent RAE (Research Assessment Excercise) Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design was rated as the top institution in Scotland for research in art and design, and one of the best in the whole of the UK

We are one of the few Art & Design Colleges in the UK that is part of a world class university (Times World University Rankings 2007). A culture of cutting edge research infuses our teaching programmes, and ensures that our students are informed by the latest developments in their field.

Our programme at Dundee links creativity with real world issues. The course is multidisciplinary and multicultural, embracing the dynamic role of design. Our students come from a range of design disciplines: from graphics to textiles, from jewellery to interactive media....and everything inbetween.

Your creativity can be used to design products, to visualise design solutions and to tackle social issues. Our students work individually and in teams to share expertise and knowledge. Design industry professionals and leading academics introduce a wide range of design methods, tools and strategies to help students position themselves as design leaders.

The Masters of Design course aims to:

equip students with the skills to research, develop, evaluate and communicate design solutions

enable students to articulate their skills as designers: observation, visualisation and embodiment of ideas, to demonstrate how design knowledge and thinking can be applied to areas outside the traditional domain of design

allow students to locate or reposition their existing design practice in a new socio-economic context

Students initially work on set project briefs to explore new methods of working and thinking, before focusing on their individual project proposal. A subject specific advisor from the School of Design’s Research Community or from Industry is appointed to advise each student in project development and realisation.

Workshops, lectures and seminars are given by nationally and internationally renowned experts from design, art, psychology, computing, business and a range of other disciplines.

Andrew Harrold, Graduate, Director and  Design Strategist, Inventive Reception

"This is one of the finest institutions in Britain where researchers routinely push back the boundaries of knowledge and teachers inspire their charges. The winners are the students lucky enough to study here."
