Lisa Cresswell (2005) studied illustration at undergraduate. On the masters programme Lisa developed tools to help midwives communicate with mothers-to-be whose first language was not English, using sensitive and appropriate illustration. Lisa is now a researcher on research council funded project investigating the role of communication design in counter-terrorism. You can hear Lisa talk more about the project.

Jen Ballie (2008) studied constructed textiles at undergraduate. Her master’s project looked at how virtual media might reduce our consumption of throwaway fashion. During her Masters study Jen fought off stiff competition to secure an innovative PhD scholarship funded by ethical retailer Neal’s Yard at the University of the Arts London.

Jen is now working within the vibrant Textiles Futures Research Group (Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, Chelsea College of Art & Design and London College of Fashion) a world centre for innovation.

Ahmed Aljuhany (2009) studied architecture and interior design in Dubai. His current project is examines how lessons can be learned from traditional islamic architecture to create contemporary designs for the Gulf States.

Jumi Kim (2009) studied industrial design at Honik University in Seoul before spending five years working as a lighting and gift designer.  Her current project looks at how light and shadow can be used in wayfinding systems for public buildings.

Lauren Currie (2009) studied Innovative Product Design. Her Masters Projects will examine how Service Design can reach a range of stakeholders. Lauren is also researching older users needs for a European telecom company’s research lab. She mentors first year undergrduate Design Studies students from the Innovative Product Design and Interactive Media Design Programmes, sharing her insights and experiences.  Lauren worked freelance for designthinkers in Amsterdam before joining the masters programme. Kate Pickering (2009) studied jewellery design at Dundee and has worked with internationally  renowned silversmith, Malcolm Applebey. Kate’s master’s project examines how jewellery can be used to aid reminiscences in wearers with memory loss. Kate is also researching older users needs for a European telecom company’s research lab.

Giorgio Giove (2009) studied Innovative Product Design at undergraduate. Gio’s master’s projects examine the use of storyboarding in the design process, specifically in the deveopment of interactive surfaces. Gio is also researching older users needs for a European telecom company’s research lab. Divya Kymal (2008) studied graphic design in Chennai, India. Her master’s project considered how the University of Dundee can communicate a clear and consistent message to international applicants. Divya is now working for Idiom Designs in Bangalore as a graphic designer.

Transferring today to tomorrow

Master of Design Students Lauren Currie, Kate Pickering, Giorgio Giove and Rob Black are undertaking a 3 month project with Deutch Telekom laboratories; T-labs, in Berlin focussing on information communication for older users. The project was initiated by the renowned design researcher Dr Rosan Chow of T-labs. The students have backgrounds in interaction design, multi-touch technology, jewellery and service design.  Project mentoring, research and facilitation are being provided by Mike Press, Professor of Design Policy and Head of School, Hazel White, Director of the Masters of Design program and Fraser Bruce, a specialist in team dynamics and product development. The outcome will be visualisations of new information and communication products and services for older users.
