Fredrik Lundin saxophone
Hasse Poulsen guitar
Lars Juul drums

This group has been through quite a lot; We have played small venues, big stages, played a lot, and almost not, made experimental music and played stylistic music, had bad critics, and extraordinary critics, we’ve travelled by train, boats, planes, cars – And we really like this way of life.

Our new repertoire MURDER IN NURDERLAND is a more direct and simple music than what we have done before. It is a more jazzy sound, you can really hear the saxophone – Lundin’s unique cry –the touch of sticks and brushes, and the steely twang of Poulsen’s Guild.

MURDER IN NURDERLAND is music written to be played, played live that is. themes that can be twisted and turned upside down. It is jazz, instrumental music with themes and solos.

Peace and Love!

« A budding music that makes you happier and wiser»
Christian Munch-Hansen, information 2006 about concert in Odense november 2007

“Poulsen and his Danish trio explore successive stylistic niches with a consumed art of minimalism – getting a maximal effect in
terms of musical density.”
Robert Latxague – jazz magazine 2006 about Rugby in Japan

“ A command of timbre and finely cut nuances that make every sound (or figure) appear as a logical consequence of what came before.”
Thorbjørn Sjøgren, JazzSpecial 2006 about Rugby in Japan

“Funny title, a great trio, one hell of a record”
Alex Dutilh, jazzman 2006 about Rugby in Japan

“This is the most enigmatic CD of the year”
Serge Loupien, Libération 2006 about Rugby in Japan

A central album where each musician finds a special place. To be heard at home or to be experienced in concert….
Sabine Moig Jazzosphere 2006 about Rugby in Japan

“These three experienced gentlemen make a music that oozes contrary creativity.”
Christian Munch-Hansen, information 2006 about Rugby in Japan

“This music cleverly hides its game: it’s the cry of pain leading the happy marches, the laugh of the clown grinding his teeth, and war lurching behind the popular feast.”
Joël Pagier Improjazz 2006. about Rugby in Japan

“It is remarkable that Poulsen on this record is closer to the roots of jazz than I have ever heard him be before.”
Boris Rabinowitch, Politiken 2006 about Rugby in Japan

“Anyway, if you like good music and inventive musicians don’t hesitate to listen to these guys.”

a little bit of history

Since 1991 Sound of Choice has played more than 150 concerts, given clinics, and made radio recordings in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Austria, and Germany. Sound of Choice has released four CD’s: Triple Exposure 1993, Sound of Choice 1995, Dynamics 1998, and Back Street Theatre in 2001. Sound of Choice has worked with Barry Guy, Markus Stockhausen, Raymond Strid and quite a few Danish musicians and a few dancers and poets.

Fredrik Lundin is one of Denmark’s most  respected instrumentalists - definitely the most respected of our generation. Strongly rooted in the free jazz tradition it is hard to imagine any musical style which he does not play - and plays well. Apart from leading the successful 11-piece band Overdrive he is a sought after soloist in all of Scandinavia, which collaborations with Jon Balke’s Magnetic North and Palle Danielsson is a good example of. He is a prolific composer for both classical ensembles, singers, and jazz groups of any size.

Hasse Poulsen generally rests close to improvised music. Playing and recording with musicians and groups in various countries, he has developed a unique way of playing the guitar incorporating preparations as well as a mix of traditional and alternative techniques.

Lars Juul is a sought after drummer in Denmark in the fields between improvised and new jazz music. Always innovative and subtle he - like Lundin - is now working on incorporating samplers and electronics in his kit in order to expand the possibilities of the drums both concerning sound and rhythmic textures.
