Career Outline:
Following the interruption of his career by the war, he began formal training in three midwestern universities gathering both a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Following eight years of internship Harvey began private practice with six contracted editions of serigraphs. His personal production tended toward single color wood cuts, beer can etchings and allegorical oils of a figurative nature. This body of work was lost in a transition that was to end one career and begin another. It seems providence won’t be denied indefinitely. Some success with stone carving and welding prompted a complete transition and relocation from the midwest into the south west.
Following several years as a working artist in New Mexico he moved into rural Arkansas building a print studio and making etchings. During this time some bronze, steel and marble sculpture was produced, and a body of 106 editions of single and multicolor etchings. After thirty years of printmaking a new direction in the painting of small abstracts in oil was begun. Early recognition of this work has led to acquisitions by some governmental interests.
“Abstracts are not necessarily easy. The collector must have some experience in seeing abstracts so an educated audience is required.
Harvey feels overwhelmed with mass imagery. Shock and fear waste energy and negate creativity. Man seems to know what he and the environment look like. Perhaps boredom motivates progressively more violent imagery. Abstract work arises from an understanding of man’s technique in seeing and perceiving, so new, exciting and hopefully, positive imagery can become available.
