Baltimore Living History Theatre Series 2006-2007

*November 5 - 2:00 pm - Laura Keene, (1826-1873) was the celebrated actress performing at Ford’s Theatre when President Lincoln was assassinated.  This consummate leading lady began her unprecedented career as America's First Female Manager at the Charles Street Theatre in Baltimore. Recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award, Tamara Johnson, performs selections from her acclaimed one-woman show.  FreeFall Baltimore

November 19 -2:00 pm - Ella Joline Gutman Hutzler (1855-1942) will bring the past to life with a lively slide presentation about the Jewish-owned department stores that once lined Howard and Lexington Streets. As the wife and daughter of prominent department store owners, Mrs. Hutzler had a unique vantage point on these grand emporiums. This living history performance, developed by the JMM, will be performed by Harriet Lynn  of Heritage Theater Artists’ Consortium.  Free Fall Baltimore

March 25 - 2:00 pm - Mary Elizabeth Garrett, (1854-1915) Quiet Revolutionary. The most prominent woman philanthropist of her day, Baltimorean Garrett revolutionized American medicine by starting the  nation’s first graduate-level, co-educational medical school at Johns Hopkins University, raised the standard for  female education by establishing the aided in the establishment of the Bryn Mawr School for Girls,  and provided a model of modern philanthropy through her unprecedented gifts. accept her demands to have women study to become doctors at the institution before receiving a desired financial gift from her national fundraising efforts and personal significant contribution. Kathleen Waters Sander, author, and actress, Diane Briante, portraying Miss Garrett, will be present for this occasion.   $

April 15 - 2:00 pm - Ella Shields, (1879-1952) Ella rose from a little girl from Baltimore, MD to  a legendary male impersonator in British Music Hall and in vaudeville.  Among her many credits Miss Shields opened the London Palladium in 1910 and during a 50+ year stage career she performed with such theatrical luminaries again at the London Palladium as Danny Kaye and Julie Andrews  for a Royal Command performance in 1948 and in the previous year Ella Shields served as Emcee for a brief vaudeville revival at Baltimore’s own Hippodrome Theatre. Ella Shields is the likely inspiration for “Victor” in Victor/Victoria.  Her signature song, Burlington Bertie from Bow, introduced in 1914, is still being sung today. Program includes music/song/dance. Actress/playwright, Harriet Lynn. $
