Shawn Williamson
Sculptor
Shawn draws the inspiration for his work from his deep connection with the ancient past. Most of his pieces have a spiritual dimension, whether a statue of Madonna and Child, Pictish rock art or a carving of a bird. Often this involves interpreting the vision of his clients into stone.
He has carried out commissions for all kinds of organisations, from town and parish councils, charities and trusts to universities, churches and corporate bodies. His work is divided into four main areas: monolithic stone sculpture, sculptural functional features, smaller stone sculptures and sketch models (small pieces in plaster of paris or plastiline for casting in bronze resin).
• Monolithic stone sculpture
Usually over life size and carved in sandstone, slate, granite or limestone. More likely to be public commissions, as they can take several months to produce and may require funding. Hands-on training for the community can be offered as part of a government funded or privately financed package. See Training to find out more.
• Sculptural functional features
Vandalproof limestone seats have been very popular for public spaces and are not expensive to produce. Mostly commissioned by community-based organisations, but also desirable to individuals as garden features.
• Smaller stone sculptures
Usually commissioned by private individuals, with those created directly from the artist’s own inspiration sold via galleries. Although Shawn’s smaller pieces have largely been figurative, he also works on innovative abstract concepts.
• Sketch models
Shawn sculpts a sketch model for his monolithic work and then has it cast in bronze alloy or resin. Some of these are proving very saleable in their own right. Produced as one-offs for private individuals or as limited editions for corporate clients.
For large government-funded or privately financed projects involving training in the community, Shawn operates as Shawn Williamson Art & Craft Training.
