The North Carolina Piedmont, 1864. On a lazy Springtime afternoon two young Confederate soldiers take a pair of horses for a short ride. Along the way they discover an isolated farmhouse and decide to help them-selves to a pair of chickens. As they make their escape with the catch one is cut down by the blast of a shot-gun. The farm's owner, a young widow who only recently buried her soldier husband, killed a thief who was stealing the few possessions she had left. Immediately she feels devastated by what she has done. Now the surviving soldier must decide what to do with her, and whether to avenge the death of his friend. How will they find "atonement"?
