Martha Herbert, Ed Casey, Bonnie and Len Cohen

This photo tells much of our May conference at Esalen. On the left is Martha Herbert, a pediatric neurologist at Harvard Med School. Next to her, Ed Casey, a phenomenological philosopher, professor at SUNY Stonybrook.  Then Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, the founder of Body-Mind Centering, and Len Cohen.  They represent the three poles of our lively discussions:  biomedical research into disease and treatment, a philosophical analysis of the significance of different avenues into experience, and the expansion of scientific methods, and the craft of bodily practices. With them, we are constantly addressing the challenge of modern scientific medicine to remain anchored to its primal roots in human experience, and to the situation of humans in an environment crucial to our survival—the interwoven causalities of genetic structures, social and familiar relations, clean air, healthy food; transformative body practices.
