Native Root Designs functions from a holistic perspective in the garden. Doing what is right for the client and the earth.

Gardens Prove Themselves in Time
Time is a crucial design force in gardens and with years of experience and education Native Root Designs understands how to maintain gardens so that they are able to mature gracefully.
Many of our clients have large lots. We may visit them twice per year or six times per year. The amount of visits depends on budget, details, and flexibility.
We are able to renovate the plantings in a garden so that they require less maintenance. We help prioritize what the goals of the garden are for the clients.
Regardless of frequency we always do what needs to be done for the budget of the client and the prosperity of the garden.

Pruning - large shrubs and small trees. Thinning mature shrubs, reviving poorly pruned shrubs. Letting the light in.
Planting - whether it’s just filling in a corner, seasonal pots or Planting for the entire garden in a new installation we are experienced, resourceful and highly aesthetic.
Garden installation - We install stone walls, patios and pathways, irrigation and soil amendment. We can see a project from start to finish and we have a reliable list of excellent subcontractors.
Mulching - Generally we mulch all of our gardens in late winter or early spring. Mulch provides many benefits to a garden. see sustainable practices page
Renovations/ Restorations - Restoring gardens is an art. We are able to “read” the garden and see lots of what has or has not happened to it. We can step back and see the initial design intention. Thinning old shrubs, bring some up while taking others down a little really allows a garden to breathe. It puts plants in their setting, serving a specific function in the landscape.
Design - We do garden designs. First having a site visit where we take pictures and discuss priorities and problem areas. After that is very dependent on the clients needs. Many people simply want a new planting or different pathways. Other people desire whole new look, patios, pathways, raised beds, retaining walls, etc. Much of our design work is rather informal, no drawings just said wishes and the fulfillment of those wishes. We do scaled, perspective, axonometric garden designs too. They are all hand drawn with a key and a plant list.
Maintenance - We do not do lawns. We go through the garden and touch on every plant. cutting down perennials lifting low branches, separating everything so that the garden has depth, light and air flowing through it. Weeding when necessary to ensure the plants are able to grow with minimal competition. Dividing perennials when necessary. We remove plants that have re-seeded and are not desired. Re-locate plants that have out grown their locations. Plant new plants as desired, to fill in or to transplant from pot displays.
Container Displays - Depending on location and function we create a design utilizing the most appropriate containers and filling them with the most dazzling plants and flowers. This can range from a specimen tree in a large cedar box to a prized rose in a hand built ceramic pot with a crushed glass mulch! Most of the time a series of containers works best. Getting the most scale and color possibilities.
Coaching - We have experience in educating clients
on how to manage their gardens. We are flexible in the
arrangement of how this works. Some people want to
come out and work shoulder to shoulder and
understand why we do certain things that they may not
be familiar with. Other people enjoy walking through
their garden and having us explain how each aspect
relates to the rest of the garden.

In one way or another all of these elements take place during our routine maintenance.
That is the holistic perspective from which we function.

What ever your needs are we are open to discussing them and finding a solution that works for you.
