The Tempest was not my first choice of plays that year. So few students came to the auditions, not enough to do the original play. Some years before I had seen a production of The Tempest by ACTER (a group from England) using only 5 people! I had 10 who were committed to the production no matter what we did so we forged ahead with The Tempest. When the other students found out that we would be doing a Shakespeare play they complained. They would have auditioned had they known we would be doing Shakespeare! I dare say I was taken aback and proud. I have sought to offer my students work that would challenge and engage them. Now they expect to be challenged and engaged.
