Director’s Notes
Mulan Jr., the Musical Theatre International stage version of the Disney movie Mulan, is the retelling of an ancient Chinese story of a young woman who defies the traditional role of women to make a difference. Maybe, in our modern minds, that does not sound so unusual. Most of our audience and all of our cast & crew have lived in a time when it is normal for a woman to be and do whatever she wants. We almost don’t remember what it was like to be limited in the choices we could make.
Mulan speaks not only to women, but to anyone who may feel limited in their choices because of the tradition that surrounds them. Like Mulan, we must have the courage to take the chance to make positive changes.
