Director’s Notes

    GODSPELL Junior is the junior version of the Broadway smash hit GODSPELL – a musical based on the Gospel according to Matthew. The show was a hit from the beginning and continues to be one of the most popular shows ever, especially with colleges, high schools & middle schools.  The junior version contains almost all of the songs from the original show and most of the parables. 

    The original piece was conceived and directed by John-Michael Tebelak.  Mr. Tebelak wrote his now timeless show in 1971 in response to the lack of energy and community he experienced in the church he attended during his graduate school days. He used the work as his graduate thesis at Carnegie Melon.

The energy and sense of community that permeates Mr. Tebelak’s work still resonates with audiences today.  Maybe more than ever before, we need to feel the sense of security a community affords.  Jesus came not only to reconcile us to God, but to one another, to encourage community.
